Light the home fires and put some meat on the grill: filming has begun on the second season of House of the Dragon, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series. This comes straight from an HBO press release, so you know it’s real.

House of the Dragon has returned,” said showrunner Ryan Condal. “We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.”

The first season of House of the Dragon ended with the death of Rhaenrya Targaryen’s son Lucerys at the hands of her half brother Aemond Targaryen (and Aemond’s dragon Vhagar, it was kind of ambiguous). She is ready for war. Expect season 2 to get bloody.

Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith and others return for House of the Dragon season 2

The press release also provided a cast list for season 2. It features everyone you’d expect, including:

  • Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen)
  • Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower)
  • Emma D’Arcy Rhaenyra Targaryen)
  • Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen)
  • Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon)
  • Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole)
  • Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen)
  • Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen)
  • Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria)
  • Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower)
  • Harry Collett (Jacaerys Velaryon)
  • Bethany Antonia (Baela Targaryen)
  • Phoebe Campbell (Rhaena Targaryen)
  • Phia Saban (Helaena Targaryen)
  • Jefferson Hall (twins Jason and Tyland Lannister Lannister
  • Matthew Needham (Larys Strong)

And there will be plenty of new characters as well; we’ll probably learn who’s playing them in short order.

HBO sent along a cool image of the Iron Throne, above. We’re back in business.

Behind the camera, Ryan Condal will continue on as showrunner. Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, who helped shoulder the load in season 1, has departed, although another Game of Thrones director — Alan Taylor — is coming on board to help out. Executive producers include Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, Vince Gerardis, and Fire & Blood author George R.R. Martin.

HBO also included some info about an on-set shadowing and mentorship program meant to train new directors. B Welby and Ebele Tate will hone their skills on the set of House of the Dragon season 2. Neat!

We don’t know exactly when House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere on HBO, but we’re guessing it’ll be along sometime in 2024.
