The iconic Star Wars opening crawl will return in new movies
By Ashley Hurst
It’s been a good few years since Star Wars fans got to experience a new movie in theaters. Things have been going strong on TV with shows like The Mandalorian to Andor, but neither o them feature the franchise’s iconic opining crawl; you know, those bright yellow paragraphs floating through the galaxy.
Even movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story lacked the crawl, and some fans have started to worry that it’s never coming back. But don’t give up hope!
The opening crawl will become a standard part of Star Wars movies
During the recent Star Wars Celebration event in London, a glut of new projects were announced, including three new movies. There’s one movie set 25,000 years before A New Hope directed by James Mangold, a movie from Dave Filoni that ties into the events of The Mandalorian, and one from Sharmeen Obaid-Chino that follows Rey (Daisy Ridley) 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the crawl will make a triumphant comeback for these films. “The crawl’s coming back,” she said.
Interestingly, Kennedy squashed suggestions that the crawl would only return for the Rey movie. “The crawl is for movies.”
I think we can live without having the crawl in the Disney+ shows. I mean, The Mandalorian has got on fine without it. It’s an added bonus for the big screen experience, I suppose.
Kathleen Kennedy teases the Rey movie
The Rey movie has made a lot of waves. “As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left Episode 9 with Ray making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi order,” Kennedy teased.
"And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now. But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that."
As for whether we’ll see any other franchise favorites show up, Kennedy isn’t ruling anything out. “It’s entirely possible to see some people come back,” she teased.
Currently, there’s no release dates for the upcoming Star Wars movies. Watch this space!
