This week, Netflix will release Seven Kings Must Die, a feature-length movie concluding the five-season journey of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon) in The Last Kingdom. After eight years and over 40 episodes, Dreymon is naturally emotional about concluding Uhtred’s story.
In the series finale of The Last Kingdom, Uhtred finally managed to reclaim his home of Bebbanburg, which he’d been trying to do for the entire show. Now, in Seven Kings Must Die, England is once again plunged into chaos. Following the death of King Edward, several contenders fight for his crown. Naturally, Uhtred gets caught up in the conflict.
“Having the two-hour special at the end of it was such a blessing because it let me off easy,” Dreymon told RadioTimes. “I knew I had that bit of time left. And to be honest, I’ve spent so much time with the character letting the character go was the easier part of it all. The hard part is just knowing that you won’t work again with all of these people in that same configuration. I am friends with a lot of people from the crew and all of the cast so I am seeing the people again.”
"It’s such a special thing to just be in this world together and see each other every day and spend that time together in the mud,” he added. “As crazy as that sounds, I’m going to miss that the most."
Seven Kings Must Die is “a wonderful way to say goodbye” to The Last Kingdom
Seven Kings Must Die marks the last time Dreymon will play Uhtred. Naturally, he described this feeling as “bittersweet.” Still, he’s thankful that it worked out this way, saying that the movie was “a wonderful way to say goodbye and pay my respects to the time that I’ve had there.”
Seven Kings Must Die premieres tomorrow, April 14. Are you ready to say goodbye to Uhtred of Bebbanburg? If you need to be brought up to speed on how season 5 ended, , we’ve got you covered:
