The Last Kingdom spinoff would be “very hard” to make

Netflix’s medieval drama series The Last Kingdom wrapped up this past weekend with Seven Kings Must Die, a movie that followed up on the five-episode TV show and seemed to finally bring Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s story to an end…although there was still a little room for ambiguity.

But is it the end? Well, Seven Kings Must Die takes us to the finish of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories novels, so yeah, probably. And star Alexander Dreymon doesn’t see himself returning as Uhtred anytime soon. “As of now, I don’t,” he told RadioTimes. “But who knows? It’s not the plan at the moment, for sure.”

There is “nothing in the works” regarding a Last Kingdom spinoff

But what about a spinoff? Even if Uhtred’s story is over, The Last Kingdom has a large ensemble cast, so perhaps someone else could pick up the sword? Martha Hillier, who wrote Seven Kings Must Die, doesn’t see it happening. “I think it would be very hard,” she said. “You’d have to find a character as special as Uhtred and I think that would be hard because, actually, those sort of leading men… We think that there must be loads of them out there, but I think they’re really quite hard to find.”

"So I think it might have to be ever so slightly different. I don’t know, but no one has spoken to me about that. There is nothing in the works, or if there is I haven’t been asked about it."

These days, shows come back all the time, but in the case of The Last Kingdom, where it adapted a completed book series, it’s probably best to let it rest in peace. Then again, to quote Dreymon, “who knows?”
