Season 3 of The Mandalorian is at an end, with the epic finale “The Return” finally seeing the Mandalorians fight to retake their homeworld of Mandalore. Now that the dust has settled and the battle is won, it begs the obvious question: what happens next?
Unlike season 2, which left off on a huge cliffhanger with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) parting ways with Grogu as well as a teaser for The Book of Boba Fett, season 3 wrapped things up pretty neatly. The Mandalorians are settling into their new (old) home under the rule of Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), while Din formally adopts Grogu and signs on to hunt down Imperial remnants for the New republic. He and Grogu now have a nice little cabin on Nevarro to serve as their home away from Mandalore. It’s happy endings all around!
Given how many bigger picture plotlines were wrapped up in season 3, it’s very easy to wonder if this might serve as the de facto ending of the series. Here’s everything we know about The Mandalorian’s future, and whether it’s getting a season 4.
Will there be a season 4 of The Mandalorian?
In case you’ve just watched the season 3 finale and wondered “was that the series finale of The Mandalorian,” the simple answer is that no, it was not. While season 4 has not yet been officially announced by Disney and Lucasfilm, series creator Jon Favreau recently confirmed to French entertainment news outlet BFMTV Inside that season 4 was already written, and sounded confident it would end up getting the greenlight. No big surprise there; despite any divisions amongst fans over the quality of season 3, The Mandalorian is still one of the most successful shows on Disney+. Of course they want more!
“Season 4? Yeah, I’ve written it already,” Favreau said. “We have to know where we are going to tell a fully formed story. So, we had mapped it out, Dave and I. And then slowly you just write each episode. So I was writing it during post-production, because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”
When will The Mandalorian season 4 premiere?
So we know that plans have been made for what could happen in season 4 of The Mandalorian, and that barring any shocking turns, it will happen. But when exactly will it be hitting our TV screens?
That’s a much harder thing to predict. There was a two-and-a-half year gap between seasons 2 and 3, so we’re certainly not expecting season 4 to come out anytime soon. The series is also expected to become even more intertwined with Dave Filoni’s new Ahsoka show, as well as the movie he’s helming for Lucasfilm that will be set during this same time period.
A 2025 release date for The Mandalorian season 4 seems likely. Until then, the first three seasons are streaming now on Disney+!
