An Ember in the Ashes

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir would be the perfect book adaptation for the streaming era. There’s so much going on in Sabaa Tahir’s four-book series. While I could also picture this story as a film series, it would be so much better as a TV show with more time to show how expansive this world is, develop the characters, and explore the passage of time in a way that I don’t think would work on the big screen.

At one point, An Ember in the Ashes was actually going to be a movie series. Paramount bought the rights to the books in 2013, before the first novel had even come out: An Ember in the Ashes released in 2015, followed by A Torch Against the Night in 2016, A Reaper at the Gates in 2018, and A Sky Beyond the Storm in 2020. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like anything ever happened with that deal, and it’s hard to find any information about whether or not the rights revert back to Tahir or if a TV series based on the book series would be possible.

The series tells the story of Laia and Elias, two teens who are fighting for their freedom and trying to overthrow the oppressive Martial Empire, which resembles ancient Rome. There are epic fight sequences, battles, magic, heists, romance, mystery and so much more in this book series. If you’re a fantasy fan and you’ve never read An Ember in the Ashes, you should definitely check it out. After that, I think you’ll be on my side in wanting a TV series based on the book series.
