Richard Madden assesses the value of the Red Wedding a decade out
By Dan Selcke
The ninth episode of the third season of Game of Thrones, “The Rains of Castamere,” aired nearly 10 years ago. This was the episode where Robb and Catelyn Stark were slaughtered along with much of their army at the wedding of Catelyn’s brother Edmure Tully. Since then, the term “Red Wedding” has made its way into the popular consciousness.
Richard Madden played Robb Stark for the first three seasons of the show, and being killed at the Red Wedding assures him a place in the TV hall of fame. He will never stop being asked about it. Entertainment Tonight brought it up just recently while he was promoting his new Amazon series Citadel, giving him a chance to look back on his time on Game of Thrones:
"I still have fond memories of that whole experience. I mean, not that particular scene, but the whole experience I have fond memories of. It’s nice to be back into recurring series drama where you get so much time to tell a story, and the you get these huge payoffs like [the Red Wedding.] Three seasons deep we got to have this horrible death with characters that you’re invested in. I think that’s our ambition [with Citadel] too, to create a huge world and get to know these people well."
I like him trying to pivot back to Citadel. That’s a pro right there.

Citadel, for the record, is described as an “action-packed spy series with a compelling emotional center” and “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series,” which sounds vague and sequel-baiting, but sure, why not? Could be fun.
Madden stars alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The first season of Citadel premieres on Amazon on April 28. It’s already been renewed for a second.
