Yahoo! The Super Mario Bros. Movie is absolutely crushing it at the box office! It has maintained the number one position since its release on April 5 and has recently added another $58 million to its domestic total for a total of $434 million. Add in the international markets, and the movie has made a grand total of $876 million. It may yet pass the billion-dollar mark!

According to Box Office Mojo, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is firmly holding the #1 spot despite new challenges from movies like Evil Dead Rise, which released at #2. Guy Ritchie’s new movie The Covenant opened at #3. Meanwhile, hangers-on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves take the #4 and #5 spots.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a-killing it!

If you haven’t watched The Super Mario Bros. Movie, then stop everything you’re doing and go check it out. There is a reason it is stomping the competition at the box office. Having just watched it this past weekend, the movie is filled with plentiful Easter Eggs for fans of the games, as well as appealing to a whole new generation.

As a ’90s kid, I couldn’t get enough of the film. I’m not shocked that the movie has been performing so well. It has one of the most powerful draws in film: nostalgia. Did anyone else suddenly want to play Super Mario Kart after watching the film?

Granted, there isn’t a ton of competition at the box office right now, with no Marvel or DC movie currently in theaters. We’ll see if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can dethrone Mario when it comes out on May 5.
