George R.R. Martin: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms still in “early stages”
By Dan Selcke
The other week, we learned that Warner Bros. Discovery was producing a new Game of Thrones prequel show: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, an adaptation of the first novella in George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg series. The series is about a knight and his squire who travel across Westeros around 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones (and around 100 years after House of the Dragon). It’s a more relaxed, lower stakes story than what we’re used to, which should be a fun change of pace.
This new series will be on Max, formerly HBO Max, rather than on HBO itself, or at least that’s what the announcement has led us to believe. In any case, another Game of Thrones show is on the way. What’s more, the announcement revealed that George R.R. Martin himself will work as a writer on the show; the last time he wrote a TV script was during the fourth season of Game of Thrones, where he wrote the episode where King Joffrey dies at his own wedding.
Martin hasn’t commented on that yet. But he did put in a few words at the Atlanta Film Festival, where he appeared with actor Vincent D’Onofrio to talk about the new short film Night of the Cooters, about Martians attacking a small Texas town in the 1800s.
George R.R. Martin will write on Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight
I think we can all agree that warranted a brief tangent. But here’s what Martin said about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, per Shakefire:
"I don’t know when that’s going to debut, but we got a writing room. We got a full season pickup so we’re going to be doing that. That’s in the early stages."
That writer’s room will be headed by Ira Parker, who wrote on the first season of House of the Dragon. With all of his commitments, I can’t imagine Martin himself will spend a ton of time in it, but it’s cool to know he’ll be contributing a script or two.
Martin has also said that the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will run for six episodes, which sounds about right for this shorter story. If it goes well, Martin has written two more novellas in the Dunk and Egg series, with plans for many more in place. We’ll see how far this one can go…
