The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is Amazon’s new fantasy drama, a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterwork set thousands of years before the likes of Bilbo Baggins was even born. The first season ran on Prime Video in 2022, debuting to reasonable acclaim and respectable-if-not-spectacular numbers. When can we expect more episodes?

Well, certainly not this month, that’s for sure. The Rings of Power is one of the most expensive shows in the history of television. They’re not yet finished shooting the second season, and when they are, there will still be months of post-production work to do. Bringing Middle-earth to life onscreen takes time.

Our best guess is that The Rings of Power season 2 will be out in 2024. Sit tight.

One bit of good news is that shooting on The Rings of Power season 2 is unlikely to be delayed by the recent strike by the Writer’s Guild of America. Hollywood writers are on strike in the hopes that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers will meet their demands. That could delay production on some series. But since all the scripts for The Rings of Power season 2 were already written, it should be fine.

Now, if Amazon hoping to get started on scripts for season 3, there may be a problem. But we’ll cross that bridge of Khazad-dûm when we get to it.
