Sounds like Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be a musical
By Ashley Hurst
In 2021, WandaVision kicked off Disney+’s seemingly never-ending slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows. The series followed Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they live out an idyllic life in the sitcom-inspired town of Westview. However, things are not as they seemed, especially with witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) pulling the strings. Soon, Agatha will return to our screens with a show of her own: Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which is poised to be a fun musical endeavor!
We can’t think of Agatha’s role in WandaVision without remembering her catchy “Agatha All Along” musical bit, a tune that’s been stuck in our heads on endless repeat since. It was written by famed Frozen and Frozen 2 composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who won an Emmy for the tune.
The husband-wife composers have returned to score Coven of Chaos. After their return was confirmed, Kristen Anderson-Lopez took to Twitter to share her excitement. “Well, the beans are spilled. B & I are having the BEST time with cast of the upcoming Marvel show,” she wrote before rhapsodize about working with star Patti LuPone (the tweet has since been deleted). “It has been a thrill of a lifetime to work with Patti, a role model and hero since I became completely obsessed and thought I was Evita in 2nd grade.”
Agatha: Coven of Chaos has “no CGI”
Broadway veteran Patti LuPone plays Lilia Calderu, “a 450-year-old Sicilian witch” with the power of divination. She told The Hollywood Reporter that the show is pretty much a musical in its own right.
“Our lead singer is Kathryn [Hahn],” LuPone said. “I’m singing backup, and the songs have been written by Kristen and Bobby Lopez. I said, ‘Listen, I don’t harmonize. I’ve always been a soprano. I’ve always been on the top line. But it’s just been great fun.”
LuPone is also happy that the production wasn’t dominated by CGI. “There’s no CGI either,” she said. “What I am seeing on this show is craft.”
Agatha: Coven of Chaos doesn’t have a release date yet, but we can expect it to premiere either later this year or in early 2024.
