Who does Florence Pugh play in Dune: Part Two?
By Dan Selcke
Warner Bros. Discovery just dropped the first trailer for Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up to his 2021 movie Dune. That movie adapted the first part of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic. Part Two will finish out that book, although Villeneuve has ideas to adapt at least one of the sequel novels.
The first movie introduced us to Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the young scion of a noble house who ended the film being forced into hiding alongside his mother the Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) after the vile Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) overthrew his house and killed his father, the Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac). Part Two will pick up with Paul and his mother Jessica embedded with the desert-dwelling Fremen people, and will see Paul getting close to the Fremen warrior Chani (Zendaya).
If you can’t tell, this thing is stacked with stars. In addition to all of those, the first movie also starred Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. Part Two will bring in yet more big names: Austin Butler will play the vicious Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen; Christopher Walken will play Shaddam IV, the emperor of the galaxy; and Florence Pugh will play the emperor’s daughter, Princess Irulan.
Who is Florence Pugh’s character Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Two?
We don’t see Walken’s character in the trailer, but we do get a fair amount of Florence Pugh as Irulan. In the book, Irulan doesn’t show up until the very end, although the novel does pull quotes from her books throughout; Irulan likes to write. Irulan also plays a bigger role in Herbert’s sequel books. It looks like Dune: Part Two will front-load her role a bit.
Pugh is part of a vanguard of young actors who are swiftly becoming new Hollywood royalty. Chalamet, Zendaya and Butler are all in that category too, so it makes sense to see them all together like this.
Dune: Part Two is out in theaters on November 3 of this year.
