Marvel has a new movie out: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But this franchise never rests. The studio is also readying its next Disney+ TV show: Secret Invasion, a series that follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he tries to deal with a clandestine alien invasion.
Secret Invasion will peel away the elements that have often made Nick Fury seem like a powerful, nigh-infallible character in the MCU, a puppetmaster who will always find his way out of a corner; not even getting snapped out of existence in Avengers: Infinity War kept him down. “Here you have a guy who’s showing his face, and showing his age,” Jackson told Empire. “It’s an opportunity to humanize someone that everybody thinks is superhuman.”
The new show will also get into Nick Fury’s personal life, something we’ve seen very little of despite Fury first appearing way back in 2008’s Iron Man, the movie that kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I had to figure out some stuff and work out some new things, which I’ve been trying to do for a while,” Jackson said. “It’s great to have an opportunity to find out who he was and delve into how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life.”
Samuel L. Jackson wants to stick around the Marvel Cinematic Universe
According to producer Jonathan Schwartz, “vulnerability” is something of a watch word for this show. “Nick Fury is just a human, Maria Hill [Cobie Smulders] is just a human. A single bullet could take them out. That’s something we don’t always get in the MCU,” he said. “To bring that level of tension, fear and vulnerability into one of our shows was really exciting.”
Does Fury being more vulnerable mean that he’s at risk of death? Might Jackson leave the MCU like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans before him? It doesn’t sound like Jackson is ready for that, but you never know. “I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has,” Jackson said. “So hopefully I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way.”
Secret Invasion starts streaming on Disney+ on June 21. It will last for six hour-long episodes.
