The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power only has a few weeks of filming left, so this isn’t deadly serious news.

It has already been reported that House of the Dragon will continue filming its second season amidst the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Now we know that the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be following suit, and they’re taking things a bit further: The Rings of Power will have to complete season 2 without showrunners J.D Payne and Patrick McKay on set.

According to Variety, the second season only has 19 days of shooting left, which may be why Amazon feels confident it can complete the shoot without the showrunners on set. Filming began on October 3 of last year, so the vast bulk of work has already been completed. Apparently, Payne and McKay planned for this contingency, so this news might not be as dire as it sounds at first.

Right now, it’s only writers on the picket line, occasionally joined by actors, directors and other entertainment professionals. But that could change soon, since SAG-AFTRA and the DGA (the actors’ and directors’ unions respectively) have contract deadlines coming up on June 30. So while The Rings of Power will likely finish shooting season 2 without much incident, many other shows could soon face serious delays.

The Rings of Power season 1 is available to stream on Amazon Prime now.
