One of the newest science fiction shows airing right now is Silo, which debuted its first two episodes on May 5. Silo is a post-apocalyptic thriller where the last 10,000 humans on Earth live in an underground silo under the belief that the outside world is too dangerous for survival. But the rub is that no one remembers who built the silo or why; and when people start asking questions about what lies beyond, it opens a can of worms that proves far more dangerous than anyone anticipated.

Starring Rebecca Ferguson, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, Common, Chinaza Uche, Ferdinand Kingsley, Will Patton, Geraldine James, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, Iain Glen, and Avi Nash, Silo has a stacked cast and a fraught story that is off to an engrossing start. Justified creator Graham Yost is serving as the showrunner, so there’s a lot of hot talent both behind and in front of the cameras.

If you’ve just started Silo or are considering it, you may have questions, like whether this new series is based on books. Fortunately, that’s a question we love answering!

What books is Silo based on?

To answer the question up front, yes, Silo is based on a book series, which is also named Silo. The book series was written by Hugh Howey, and consists of three novels: WoolShift, and Dust. Howey originally self-published Wool, before the series was later picked up and the book was reprinted by Simon & Schuster. Since then, the Silo novels have been translated into more than forty languages and have sold more than three million copies worldwide.

The upshot of all this is that if you’re curious about where the story on the Silo television show is going, the books are already out there and pretty easy to find wherever you buy your reading material.

Silo debuts new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.
