The Witcher star Anya Chalotra says Henry Cavill’s departure is “hard to take”
By Dan Selcke
The third season of The Witcher is premiering on Netflix in June, and it’s going to be a big one for the fantasy drama. As showrunner Lauren Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly, “We really feel like it’s when everything changes in the series.”
Season 3 of The Witcher will adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Time of Contempt, which has several key turning points for the plot. But the biggest change on everyone’s mind is that this is the last season where Henry Cavill will play the title role of Geralt of Rivia, professional monster hunter. Starting in season 4, he’ll be played by Liam Hemsworth.
Cavill has been the best thing about this show since the beginning, and fans are not pleased about his departure. That said, we still don’t have a firm answer as to why he’s leaving, although we definitely have our guesses; word is that Cavill was unhappy with how much Hissrich and her writing staff were willing to stray from the source material, of which he is a big fan, but until Cavill or someone else with first-hand knowledge actually speaks up, we won’t know for sure.
Anya Chalotra says The Witcher cast and crew will “miss [Henry Cavill] a lot”
It’s hard to picture The Witcher show without Cavill, although there are plenty of other cast members. For instance, Anya Chalotra plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, Geralt’s on-again, off-again sorceress love interest. She addressed Cavill’s departure speaking to EW, although stopped short of giving us details about exactly why he’s leaving.
“All we knew were the feelings that we have when any season comes to an end. It’s full of pride and love and accomplishment for what we’ve done,” Chalotra said. “So, we stayed in that moment rather than anything else. The news was… yeah, it’s hard to take because he’s a crucial part of the show and we all adore him. So, we’re gonna miss him a lot. I wish him all the best.”
At this point, I am most interested in The Witcher because I want to know more about what happened with Cavill behind the scenes, which probably isn’t what the producers want to hear, but there it is. Maybe the third season will be so good that I’ll forget all about it! The first block of episodes drop on June 29. A second block will follow on July 27.
