Archer’s fourteenth season will be its last

Archer, the long-running spy comedy on FX (and later FXX) will come to an end after its upcoming fourteenth season, The Hollywood Reporter reports. I think I speak for all fans when I say…uh…dammit, I had something for this.

But seriously, folks, Archer has had an impressive run. Created by Adam Reed, the show first premiered in 2009. Part James Bond, part The Office, part Arrested Development, and part whatever classic movies the writers mainlined that summer, Archer lasted as long as it did by being unpredictable. For instance, there was a three-season stretch that took place entirely within Sterling Archer’s coma dreams, as he imagined himself to be first a noir detective, then an Indiana Jones-like treasure hunter, then a deep space explorer. Because why not?

The excellent voice cast also helped. H. John Benjamin played Sterling Archer, and the cast was filled out by Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates and Reed himself.

The final season of Archer premieres in August

And then there was Jessica Walter, who played Archer’s taskmaster mother Mallory. Walter was essential to the show for 12 straight seasons, but died ahead of season 13. Normally, that kind of change would force a show to end, but the Archer creative team was inventive enough to keep it going, although I think it’d be weird for the series to continue too much longer after Walter’s passing.

The fourteenth and final season of Archer is in production now. The two-episode premiere will air on FXX on August 30.
