Avatar: The Way of Water coming to Max and Disney+ this summer

We’ll soon you’ll be able to head to Pandora once more, this time at home. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will be available to stream on both Disney+ and Max (formerly HBO Max) on June 7.

It’s unusual to see a big movie like this release on multiple streaming service. The Way of Water was produced by 20th Century Fox, which is owned by Disney, so you’d figure Disney would want it for Disney+ and Disney+ alone. Variety reports that the duel drop is the result of a deal between Warner Media Discovery and 20th Century Fox, which was renegotiated last year when Disney bought Fox. Under this “unusual deal,” Warner has retained the right to stream around half of Fox’s 2022 theatrical slate on Max.

It’s not expected that Disney and Warner Media will renew this deal after it expires this year, meaning viewers should enjoy the wider availability of titles like Avatar: The Way of Water while they can.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the third-highest grossing movie of all time, trailing only behind the original Avatar movie and Avengers: Endgame. It marked a return to the world of Pandora after more than a decade since the first film’s release, as well as the beginning of a bigger franchise; expect three more sequels in the coming years.
