The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard brought back the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation — including Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Brent Spiner (Data), LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) and Michael Dorn (Worf) — for a nostalgia-fueled thrill ride, and it was a hit.

The show also introduced us to the children of many of the these characters, the next next generation, if you will. They included Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher; LaForge’s kids Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) and Alandra (Mica Burton); and Kestra Troi-Riker (Lulu Wilson), whose parentage you can probably guess. What’s more, the finale ended with a one-year time jump where a couple of these characters were part of the crew on the U.S.S. Enterprise-G under Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), another franchise veteran.

All of this points toward a possible follow-up. Fans have dubbed this hypothetical show Star Trek: Legacy, and over 50,000 have signed a Change.org petition lobbying for Picard showrunner Terry Matalas to make it a reality.

Fans push for Picard showrunner to make Star Trek: Legacy

“Terry Matalas is a ‘Star Trek’ veteran who helped ‘Star Trek Voyager,’ ‘Deep Space Nine,’ and ‘Enterprise’ boldly go forward in the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” the petition reads. “And he has now created in ‘Star Trek Picard’ Season 3 what we believe is the best season of ‘Star Trek.’ Nearly all ‘Trek’ fans enjoy and support ‘Picard’ Season 3 and Matalas has expertly navigated the galaxy of ‘Trek’ legacy and in a way that has truly stunned and thrilled many lifelong fans. We would like Paramount Studio Executives and ‘Star Trek’ head Alex Kurtzman to pat themselves on the back for finding this talented Showrunner and give him more work!”

For his part, Matalas hopes the show happens. “Unfortunately, it’s up to the television gods,” he told TheWrap. “But I hope one day that that’s something we get to do; that would be this time period of the 25th century and these characters, these legacy characters and this particular generation: Jack Crusher, Sydney La Forge and Alandra La Forge. I just think I would love to see more.”

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman is hopeful as well. But with the writers strike on in Hollywood, nothing is going to happen right now. But Star Trek fans are nothing if not optimistic.
