HBO Max may save Superman & Lois
By Dan Selcke
The CW, once a thriving place for middle-grade original shows about superheroes and high schoolers and high school-age superheroes, has undergone a facelift since getting bought by station group Nexstar, which is laser-focused on the network turning a profit, something it never did under the old regime. To that end, Nexstar has canceled a lot of series, including Batwoman, Charmed, Legends of Tomorrow, and others.
In particular, the network’s DC superhero lineup has suffered. It’s down to only two shows now: Superman & Lois, which is self-explanatory; and Gotham Knights, about what happens when Batman gets murdered and the children of his most famous enemies get blamed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nexstar entertainment president Brad Schwartz wants to keep at least one of them.
Superman & Lois is definitely the favorite; it stands out among your standard CW fare as being better produced and better acted, which actually puts it in danger; Gotham Knights is much cheaper to make, if not nearly as popular, so Schwarz and company may decide to keep that one.
If The CW cancels Superman & Lois, it could find a new home on Max
That said, THR notes that Superman & Lois may move to Max (formerly HBO Max), Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service. That seems like a better fit for the series, since Max has a slightly classier pedigree.
Incidentally, I apologize to The CW fans for kind of talking down about the network in this post…everyone knows it has a reputation for fun trash, right? I have nothing against fun trash.
