In the US, the Harry Potter movies have been available to stream somewhere or another for years now, although it’s been irritating trying to keep track of where they are at any given time. Sometime they’ve been on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, sometimes they’ve been on HBO Max…the streaming wars are brutal and the Harry Potter films are an important piece of territory. Different services fight over them.

But at least you could stream them. In the UK, where Harry Potter originated, the movies could only be watched on television or bought or rented. This is from The Independent, which paints a grim picture of a Hogwarts-less dystopia.

Or at least it was such until yesterday, when all eight movies became available to watch on Netflix. That was a long time coming.

The Harry Potter movies are finally available to stream in the UK

Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns the rights to the Harry Potter series, is pushing for a comeback. The Fantastic Beasts sequel movies kind of fizzled among critics and at the box office, but the studio has a plan to reverse the franchise’s flagging fortunes: a brand new TV series that adapts the original books by J.K. Rowling.

That’s a huge undertaking. But if all goes well, Max could eventually become the streaming home for the Harry Potter movies, the new Harry Potter TV show, and the Fantastic Beasts movies, for the five people who’d like to rewatch those.

…in the US, anyway. The rights to the movies may be more complicated in the UK, but again, at least they’re available to stream now.
