Sophie Turner plays a jewel thief for The CW, and other news
By Dan Selcke
What are the talented actors from Game of Thrones doing now that the show is three years gone? As usual, plenty.
We’ll start with Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark for all eight seasons. According to Deadline, she’ll play the title character in the new CW drama Joan, about real-life jewel thief.
The series will be set in the ’80s; based on these behind-the-scenes pics, you can tell they’re going for authenticity with Turner’s hair. Joan is a young mother in her 20s trapped in a disastrous marriage with a violent criminal named Gary. When Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the opportunity to make a new life for herself and her daughter. But a new life takes money, and what do you do when you need money? You steal jewels.
Sounds pretty fun! Joan is on track to premiere in 2024.
Emilia Clarke previews Secret Invasion
In other news, Richard Dormer (Beric Dondarrion) will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Direct, he’ll be playing a character named Agent Prescott in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
Dormer is the latest of many Game of Thrones alumni to join the MCU. That includes Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), who is also in Secret Invasion, this time as the shape-shifting Skrull alien G’iah.
The MCU has been around for a while and has gotten pretty complicated, but Clarke assures everyone that Secret Invasion will be accessible. “It’s definitely a show for the fans, but it’s also a show that my mum, who doesn’t watch Marvel, will watch and get, do you know what I mean?” she told The Direct. “You can get into dangerous territory sometimes with this sort of genre where if you haven’t watched all 17 other films or shows, you’re not going to get it. This isn’t that at all.”
"I mean, I should be so lucky is what I’ll say to that. Everyone I know and everyone I’ve spoken to who is a part of the Marvel universe — and actors talk! Everyone has only the highest praise to offer. There’s a reason why actors stay in it. They’re so loved because they’re having loads of fun. So I’m down for that. Sure!"
Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ on June 21.
