Secret Invasion is a Marvel show that “grownups can dig”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a little bit of everything, but at its heart, it’s all about witty, action-packed superhero fun. It’s widely popular, with many Marvel movies are among the highest-grossing box office flicks ever made. It’s not often that the MCU dives into more mature content, although more recently we’ve seen projects aimed towards older audiences, including Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night.
Next up on Marvel’s docket is the Disney+ show Secret Invasion, which hopes to tap into that older market. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) returns to action as he learns that an army of shapeshifting Skrulls is planning to invade Earth (secretly). In order to stop them, he gathers a team — including James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) — to thwart them. It definitely looks bleaker and gritter than anything we’ve seen before from the MCU:
Ben Mendelsohn thinks Secret Invasion is for grownups
Ben Mendelsohn plays Skrull refugee Talos, who sides with Fury to fight against the rogue Skrull invaders. Mendelsohn first played the character in Captain Marvel (2019) and returns for the upcoming series.
“This is one the grownups can dig,” Mendelsohn told USA Today. “It’s mental. I hope it ends up being one of the coolest things that they’ve done.”
The actor also teased a few things about the nature of this invasion. “You can’t have a secret invasion without an invasion, right? What’s the point? What are you going to call it, ‘Secret Attempted Invasion’? ‘Secret Nearly Got There Invasion’? ” he said, confirming: “Something has definitely gotten in.”
Get ready for another brilliant Marvel duo: Nick Fury and Talos!
Everyone loves a good MCU duo, whether it’s Thor and Loki, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, Peter Parker and Tony Stark, or Doctor Strange and Wong — there are so many!
According to Mendelsohn, fans will soon be obsessed with the partnership between Talos and Nick Fury, which began back in Captain Marvel. “The relationship between Talos and Fury is sort of tighter than it’s ever been, and really not good,” he said. “I don’t know if (Talos) is like Abbott to his Costello (but) it’s something that the audience will enjoy without losing how bad the situation gets.”
It sounds like Mendelsohn thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Jackson. “He’s the most significant blockbuster actor in the history of the human race.”
