Natalie Portman says she’s open to returning to Star Wars
Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman said that she has never been asked to return to Star Wars, but is open to bringing Padme back.
Speaking to GQ, Oscar-winning actor Natalie Portman revealed that she would be willing to return to the Star Wars universe to play Anakin Skywalker’s tragic romantic partner Padme Amidala, if she is ever asked. “No one’s ever asked me to return, but I’m open to it,” she said.
Portman last appeared as Padme in the 2005 movie Revenge of the Sith, which was the conclusion of George Lucas’ prequel trilogy, which takes place before the original three Star Wars movies. Padme was a queen and later a senator from the planet of Naboo, eventually becoming the main love interest of hero-turned-villain Anakin Skywalker.
Chancellor Palpatine manipulates Anakin by playing of his paranoia that his secret marriage to Padme will end in tragedy; the only solution, Palpatine suggests, is to embrace the dark side of the Force. This path leads to Amidala’s death when she loses the will to live after giving birth to twins: Luke and Leia Skywalker.
Since her character is dead, she could appear in future Star Wars movies in a flashback. Or Disney could make a whole series focused on her character, as they did with the recent Obi-Wan Kenobi show. Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin in the prequel trilogy, was a part of that series, so clearly Disney is open to having actors return.
