Doctor Who writer has “loads” of ideas for spinoffs

The modern era of the Doctor Who franchise, better known as the Whoniverse, has had its share of successful spinoffs. Torchwood ran for four great seasons, and The Sarah Jane Adventures had a good run. And then there’s Class (2016), which is the only spinoff series to be axed after just one season.

Now that Disney controls the Doctor Who IP, we’re on the verge of a huge expansion to the Whoniverse! We don’t yet know what the plan is regarding spinoffs. There have been rumors about a show that follows iconic villains like the Daleks or the Cybermen, but nothing is confirmed.

Pete McTighe has written numerous episodes of the show, including “Kerblam!” and “Praxius. To him, the prospect of developing more spinoffs is extremely exciting. “I haven’t really been paying attention to the rumors about the spin-offs but I think Doctor Who is a show that deserves to be a much, much bigger brand which is obviously what they’re doing now,” McTighe told Radio Times.

"There’s so many monsters you can do properly great spin-offs with. Obviously the Daleks, they’re gonna be – would be a great choice. I had ideas for loads of spin-offs which involve loads of monsters and I don’t want to say because you don’t know what might happen."

Doctor Who buzz is upon us: “Everything is so on point”

With new specials and a new season on the way, the Doctor Who franchise is riding high right now, and McTighe is definitely feeling it. “I think right now is the most excited I’ve ever been about the show, I think everything is so on point, I think they’re doing an incredible job and there’s just this buzz about it again which is crazy because it’s still six months away.”

McTighe is currently writing a novelization of his “Kerblam!” episode, where the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her team visit the biggest delivery service in the universe. “I’m not done with Doctor Who, I don’t think I ever will be done with Doctor Who, it’s in my blood 24/7, it’s kind of hardwired into me. I’ve not even scratched the surface with what I want to do. The show kind of taps me on the shoulder every day. I saw Jinkx Monsoon in my street the other day and Millie Gibson in my Co-op! There’s loads of things like that that happen when you live in Cardiff and when you’re a Doctor Who person.”

The three-part 60th Anniversary special of Doctor Who will premiere in November. David Tennant is back! Catherine Tate is back! And Ncuti Gatwa will make his first appearance as the new Doctor! Bring it on!
