Indira Varma joins the cast of Doctor Who as the Duchess
By Ariba Bhuvad
According to BBC Doctor Who, Indira Varma, star of Game of Thrones and Obi-Wan Kenobi, is the newest actor to join the cast of Doctor Who for its upcoming revamp. Varma is no stranger to Doctor Who as she once starred in Russell T Davies’ spinoff Torchwood as Suzie Costello.
However, this time, she is playing a mysterious character known as the Duchess. That’s all we know for now, but I am excited to learn more about her character.
If you’re a hardcore Whovian like myself, you’re probably wondering if there will be any overlap between Varma’s character from Torchwood and her new role on Doctor Who. I wouldn’t put it past Davies, who is returning as showrunner after years away.
Indira Varma will board the TARDIS on Doctor Who
I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him,” Varma said in a statement. “I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in TORCHWOOD so am thrilled to be entering this world again.”
The upcoming fourteenth season of Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Jonathan Groff as an unknown character, and now Indira Varma as the Duchess. It’s gearing up to be quite a new season, isn’t it?
Showrunner Russell T Davies also had something to say: “I’m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our TORCHWOOD days, and this part is truly spectacular! A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.”
Okay, so the Duchess is a villain. I’m so on board with Varma as a villain, she will absolutely crush it!
Doctor Who will return later this year in November with three specials starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. Following that, Gatwa’s first episode will air in the new year.
Whovians can watch Doctor Who exclusively on the BBC in the UK and Ireland. However, Disney+ will be the new home for all new seasons of Doctor Who for those living elsewhere.
