Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
Paramount+
The big originals of Paramount+ in May was a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and the new reality show The Family Stallone, about Sylvester Stallone’s family. It’s fine. Points: +1
Netflix
As usual, Netflix has the quantity. May highlights include new seasons of Queer Eye and I Think You Should Leave, spinoffs of popular series like Queen Charlotte and XO, Kitty, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV series debut in FUBAR. But it loses points for forcing people to pay for password-sharing, something it’s encouraged as a perk in the past. Points: +1
Disney+
This past month, Disney premiered new shows like A Small Light and American Born Chinese, as well as adding all the Indiana Jones movies and the latest Ant-Man film. Points: +2
Hulu
In May, Hulu brought back series like The Great and debuted new shows like The Clearing. It also featured new FX dramas like Class of ‘09. I’m almost tempted to take points off for the pointless remake of White Men Can’t Jump, since the original holds up to this day. Points: +1
HBO Max
HBO Max is now just Max! Apart from the name change, content was fairly slim; notable originals include White House Plumbers and a new season of The Other Two. It gets an extra point for streaming the series finale of Succession, which is a huge draw. Points: +2
Amazon Prime Video
Citadel limped to the finish line in May. Besides that, Amazon had…I dunno, a comedy series called Primo? Pretty lackluster. Points: + 1
Apple TV+
Ted Lasso might have been the only Apple TV+ show anyone was talking about in May, but the service doesn’t lack for new content, including new episodes of Schmigadoon, new episodes of the sci-fi drama Silo, and more. Apple TV+ can’t get no respect. Points: + 2
Peacock
In May, Peacock got the Woody Harrelson-led sports comedy Champions, Pete Davidson’s star-stuffed series Bupkis, and a few other originals. Once again, it’ll do. Points: + 2
