Once upon a time, back in the ’90s, Nicolas Cage was going to play Superman. I’m not joking; there was a movie called Superman Lives that got pretty far along before the studio pulled the plug. Tim Burton was going to direct. There’s photographic proof of Cage in the super-suit:
So that didn’t end up happening. But now, over a quarter century later, Cage will finally play Superman in The Flash, the upcoming DC superhero movie directed by Andy Muschietti.
The Flash involves lead character Barry Allen traveling to a variety of alternate universes, including one where Michael Keaton is still Batman and another where Nic Cage is Superman. (Or maybe they’re the same universe? We’ll find out.) In any case, that’s how Cage will finally play the Man of Steel.
What Nicolas Cage could look like as Superman in The Flash
And what will that look like? We won’t know until The Flash lands in theaters, but digital artist Samukarts has mocked up a preview:
It definitely recalls the original photo of Cage as Superman from the set of Superman Lives. This could be interesting.
The Flash comes out on June 16.
