In the years since Game of Thrones dominated TV, fantasy projects have been coming at us thick and fast, from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to The Witcher to The Wheel of Time. But there is one beloved fantasy series that has yet to make it to our screens: Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law series.

The First Law began back in 2006 with The Blade Itself, which spawned two sequels: Before They Are Hanged and The Last Argument of Kings. However, none of these books are getting adapted. Instead, Abercrombie’s standalone 2009 novel Best Served Cold is getting turned into a movie.

Best Served Cold follows mercenary Monza Murcatto as she embarks on a perilous quest of revenge, one that will forever change the fate of a nation. Per Deadline, acclaimed Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller is on board to direct the film, with three-time Emmy-winning actress Rebecca Ferguson in final talks to play Monza. The film is being produced by Skydance.

Joe Abercrombie talks about Best Served Cold movie

Joe Abercrombie has worked in Hollywood before, writing an episode of Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots and working as a freelance film editor prior to becoming a published author. One of the his books getting the big screen treatment is on another level.

On Twitter, Abercrombie was tight-lipped about the project, but offered fans his assurance that the movie is in good hands with director Tim Miller. “Tim is the director of Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate as well as the main force behind Love, Death and Robots. We’ve been working to bring the First Law to the screen in one form or another for a decade now, and there is no bigger fan of, or champion for, these books,” he wrote. “Now no one get too excited because take it from a man hurt often in the past, there is always plenty of shit that can go wrong,” he advised, but we remain cautiously optimistic.”

It’s hard not to get too excited. Abercrombie’s novels are some of the most revered in the fantasy genre, and were (and still are) considered the go-to books for people suffering from Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire withdrawal. Let’s hope Best Served Cold is a success, and the adaptations keep on coming!
