The Wheel of Time season 2 isn’t coming in June 2023
By WiC Staff
The Wheel of Time is one of Amazon’s big swings at making a hit fantasy show, and ever since season 1 ended back in later 2021 we’ve been eagerly awaiting the show’s sophomore outing. Based on the long-running Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters as they attempt to defeat an ominous dark presence known as the Dark One before it can bring about a battle to end all battles and extend its dark influence across the world.
Season 1 had its share of highs and lows. It also ended with quite a few cliffhangers, which has made the wait for season 2 especially nail-biting. What lies ahead for Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) now that he knows his destiny and has set out on his own? Will the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) get her magical powers back? What’s the rogue Mat Cauthon getting up to in Tar Valon, and how will the new actor playing him be received? (Mat was played by Barney Harris in season 1, but has been recast with Dónal Finn in season 2.)
Questions, we have so many questions! But of course, the biggest of all is when we’ll actually be able to watch The Wheel of Time season 2. Fortunately, we do finally know the answer to that one.
The Wheel of Time season 2 release date
While The Wheel of Time season 2 won’t be hitting Amazon Prime Video in June of 2023, we won’t have to wait much longer beyond that. The Wheel of Time season 2 will begin airing September 1. So in a few short months, we’ll be able to see what lies in store for Rand, Moiraine and the rest!
We even got a look at some new images from the upcoming second season, which you can check out here. Those tease a few plotlines we’ve been expecting from season 2, which will adapt events from Robert Jordan’s second and third Wheel of Time novels, The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn, as well as some new stuff made up for the show. Nynaeve (Zoë Robbins) and Egwene (Madeleine Madden) are off to study with the Aes Sedai, Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) will meet the Aiel Aviendha (Ayoola Smart). We even got a good look at the Seanchan, invaders from across the sea who have returned to conquer their ancestral homeland where all our favorite characters are already residing. It’ll get messy.
Meanwhile, filming on season 3 is currently underway in Prague. It’s not quite clear yet how the Hollywood writers’ strike is affecting the production, but so far no announcement has been made that filming was put on hold and actors have been spotted on set. One of the most exciting developments on that front is that Shohreh Aghdashloo, who played Chrisjen Avasarala on The Expanse, has been seen on set, leading many fans to believe she has been cast as an important role in season 3.
Aghdashloo was fancast as the seasoned Aes Sedai Cadsuane a while back, which led to her and showrunner Rafe Judkins having a public back and forth on Twitter which hinted at both being interested in working together on the show. Cadsuane is an essential part in the series, but she isn’t introduced until A Crown of Swords, the seventh book. As such, we aren’t expecting to see her this early in the TV show unless it’s making some big deviations from the source material, which probably means Aghdashloo is playing someone else. Perhaps Elaida, one of the power players from the Red Ajah?
We likely won’t know for certain who the actor is playing for a while, but that’s okay. We’ve got an entire second season to watch first. We’ll be doing that soon enough.
The Wheel of Time season 2 premieres on Prime Video on September 1.
