It’s been a busy year so far for Finn Wolfhard; while he’s best known for playing Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things, over the past few months he has been making a name for himself elsewhere. Alongside his work for Playstation Playmakers, Wolfhard has written and directed a horror comedy alongside Billy Bryk, Hell of a Summer, giving him the opportunity to work behind the camera instead of in front of it.
Of course, he’s still best known for playing Mike Wheeler on Stranger Thigns, which has only one season left to go. Production on season 5 hasn’t yet begun, and things are now on pause until the resolution of the ongoing Hollywood writers strike. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have said that season 5 will have a full circle feel to it, returning to the key relationships and dynamics we saw in season 1.
In season 4, Mike traveled across the U.S. alongside Will (Noah Schnapp), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Argyle (Eduardo Franco) to rescue Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). At the end of the season, they all returned to Hawkins, Indiana, which was in a state of upheaval as the dark Upside Down dimension punched through into our reality. What can Wolfhard tell us about the ramifications of this in season 5?
Stranger Things season 5 will answer “an insane amount of questions about the lore”
“Well, I think [season 5] answers an insane amount of questions about the lore of Stranger Things, the world-building,” Wolfhard toldh Collider. Wolfhard also agreed with the Duffer brothers’ previous statement about things going full circle: “I think a lot of people will be happy with getting back– It’s the last season, so we kind of want to get back to the roots of why the show was so special in the first place, and why the dynamics are so special in the first place, and sort of getting back to that.”
Even though the strike has halted production, this hasn’t dampened Wolfhard’s enthusiasm for when they return. “It’s gonna be really exciting. I’m excited, obviously, to go back and shoot it. I think it’s gonna be very sad, but I’m also just excited, as a fan, to get into it, and I’m excited to see where everyone.”
Although Wolfhard is under strict instructions to not give away any details about the upcoming season, it seems he couldn’t even if he wanted to: “I don’t even know how it ends yet, truly. I’ve only read the first three [episodes], so we’ll see. But yeah, I’m excited to see where all the characters’ journeys go.” He expanded on this while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, talking about how “antsy” he was to learn more:
"I think I’m really antsy to start because I’m a fan of the show first and foremost. So I’m excited, obviously, to just see where every character’s journey takes them and everything like that."
The first four seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream now on Netflix.
