The Star Wars universe is growing faster than ever. The coming years will see numerous new TV projects drop on Disney+ (Ahsoka, The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, etc) as well as the return of Rey (Daisy Ridley) to the big screen, and even a movie wrapping up The Mandalorian saga. The universe has expanded so much it’s possible to be a Star Wars fan without ever having seen the original trilogy. Given that, do original trilogy veterans like Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) need to keep coming back for new shows and movies? Hamill himself doesn’t think so.
Hamill has featured in the franchise since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, wrapping up the Skywalker Saga in the sequel trilogy and appearing as a younger version of Luke in an in an episode of The Mandalorian. That younger Luke also appeared in The Book of Boba Fett, although Hamill wasn’t on set for that cameo.
“I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough,” Hamill told CBS. “Well, you never say never. I just don’t see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”
Mark Hamill: Star Wars doesn’t need Luke Skywalker anymore
Luke Skywalker will always be an incredibly popular character; even people who haven’t seen Star Wars have heard of him. Talking about his legacy, Hamill explains that he’s just happy to have had the chance to do what he loves for a living. “Yeah. Well, I don’t care…I mean, the truth of the matter is, I never really expected to be remembered for anything,” he said.
"I just wanted to make a living doing what I liked. And I thought, ‘Well, it could be worse. I could be, like, known as being the best actor who ever played Adolf Hitler, you know?’ At least Luke is an admirable fellow!"
Hamill isn’t particularly protective over the character. He’s happy to see Luke Skywalker live on in whatever form Disney wants. He’s even open to a potential recast. Prepare for a phone call, Sebastian Stan…
