Anthony Hopkins is one of the biggest names in acting, having established his icon status after playing serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs and its sequels. Like many other big names, he also appeared the Marvel Cinematic Universe, history’s biggest movie franchise. He played Odin, father to Thor and Loki, in the first three Thor films.

While the role has exposed him to an enormous audience, Hopkins has always had issues with the way these movies are made, particularly the heavy use of green screen, which to him diminishes the magic of acting.

“If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it,” Hopkins told the New Yorker. “They put me in armour; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit.”

Chris Hemsworth says directors criticizing the MCU is “super depressing”

The calls are coming from inside the house on this one, but Hopkins is far from the only industry vet who has criticized the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iconic filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino have all taken shots; in particular, Scorsese’s take  that Marvel movies are “not cinema” has had a lot of legs.

All of this criticism from beloved directors takes its toll on the actors. Speaking to British GQ, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) opened up about how it feels to have all of his hard work devalued when prominent directors criticize the franchise he’s come to be associated with. “That’s super depressing when I hear that,” he said. “There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me.”

"I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is… I say that less to the directors who made those comments, who are all, by the way, still my heroes, and in a heartbeat I would leap to work with any of them"

Chris Hemsworth says that Thor: Love and Thunder was “too silly”

And Hemsworth is getting it from all sides recently; even his kids’ friends criticized the latest Thor film, Love and Thunder.

“It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humour, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good,’” Hemsworth remembered. “I cringe and laugh equally at it.”

"I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the centre of it and having any real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond."

If Marvel flicks are getting people into movie theaters, that can only be a good thing. But at the moment, Hemsworth is concentrating on other projects. “I really wanna do some other stuff for a while,” he admitted.

Marvel movies are still drawing in millions at the box office. Most recently, Across the Spider-Verse is absolutely smashing it.
