James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of all things DC over at Warner Bros. Discovery, are getting ready to build their empire. The first big project, Superman: Legacy, will introduce a younger Clark Kent, along with Superman mainstay characters like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. According to Deadline, director Gunn is ready to audition several actors in person for the lead role.

Among the actors in contention are American actor David Corenswet and British actor Tom Brittney, as well as — and this is a new one — British actor Nicholas Hoult, the most prominent of the three. Hoult played Beast in a couple of the X-Men movies, played Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road, has a regular role on Hulu’s historical drama The Great, appeared alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in The Menu, and just starred opposite Nicolas Cage as the title character in Renfield. Playing Superman would be yet another big step up.

Hoult’s name was first tossed around as a potential actor to play Lex Luthor, but I guess Gunn and company thought his vibe was more wholesome than that. As for Lois Lane, candidates include Emma Mackey, Phoebe Dynevor and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan.

Superman: Legacy is due out in theaters on July 11, 2025. Things are coming together.

The Flash director Andy Muschietti is the top choice to direct new Batman movie The Brave and the Bold

As long as we’re talking about the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, there’s also a new Batman film in the making: The Brave and the Bold, about Batman’s relationship with his son Damien, who has a large presence in DC Comics.

The Brave and the Bold, for the record, has nothing to do with The Batman series starring Robert Pattinson, which is getting a sequel. There are going to be multiple Batman series running at the same time, with multiple actors under the Bat-suit.

We don’t know who will play Batman for this new project yet, but WBD may be close to hiring a director. According to The Hollywood ReporterThe Flash director Andy Muschietti is the top choice, which makes a certain amount of sense; after all, The Flash has two Batmen in it: one played by Michael Keaton and another by Ben Affleck.

The Flash opens next week. We really are awash in Batmen recently.
