The Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson are some of the most beloved fantasy novels in history. Over 14 books, we meet dozens of characters engaged in an epic struggle for the fate of everyone, everywhere, forever.

The central figure in the story is Rand al’Thor, an ordinary farmboy who finds out that he is the Dragon Reborn, a messianic figure destined to either save the world or destroy it. Rand is the most powerful channeler in the world, meaning he can create elemental weaves, travel great distances almost instantly, and generally do more or less whatever he wants to do with nary a thought.

This makes him the most powerful character in The Wheel of Time, but is he the best fighter? We asked OpenAI’s generative chatbot ChatGPT to come with an answer to that one. Here’s what it said:

Lan is a Warder, a professional bodyguard to the magic-wielding Aes Sedai sorceresses. He is highly proficient with weapons and teaches Rand pretty much everything he knows about swordcraft.

That said, when I asked ChatGPT to name the best fighter from The Wheel of Time, I still expected it to say Rand, simply because Rand could blow away several swordsmen using the power of the Dragon Reborn. But when it comes to technical fighting skill, Lan probably is more proficient.
