Yes, Marvel makes some good TV shows. But was there a scene in Loki where a tiny man crawled into his lover’s penis and then grew back to normal size instantaneously, leaving a bloody mess on the bed? No there was not. But there was on The Boys, which is why Amazon’s iconoclastic superhero show is still turning heads even as Hollywood continues to flood our feeds with all things spandex and superpowers.

And according to star Erin Moriarty, who plays electricity-themed hero Starlight, things will continue to get even more interesting as The Boys heads into its fourth season. “Every season, we go a little bit deeper with each character,” Moriarty told Collider, hinting that even the villains could gain some level of redemption. “The characters… that you thought would be villains, you start to learn a little bit more about them that perhaps makes you feel, not that they’re good guys, but that there are always gonna be details that you can never anticipate, that prevent you from putting that character in a box.”

Easily the biggest villain on The Boys is Homelander, a narcissistic man-child increasingly convinced that he should be able to do anything he wants without consequences, which wouldn’t be quite so terrifying if he didn’t also happen to be the most powerful being to ever live. It’s hard to see him having a redemption arc, but maybe someone like the Deep could turn things around.

The Boys star: “Anything can happen in that universe… and I would just say that anything and everything will”

Amazon has finished shooting the fourth season of The Boys. It’s not in post-production, although we don’t yet know when it will come out. Fingers crossed for later this year.

Moriarty couldn’t say much about what’s in store, but did tease that the final stretch will leave fans happy…or shocked; on The Boys, it can hard to tell the difference. “It feels like the way it crescendos is so earned and satisfying,” she said, adding that “anything can happen in that universe… and I would just say that anything and everything will.”
