Neil Gaiman “heartbroken” over Good Omens season 2 leak
By Dan Selcke
Based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the first season of Good Omens revolved around an unlikely friendship between the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant), who team up to prevent an apocalypse on Earth. The show got good marks when it aired back in 2019, and another season is just around the corner.
But the second season has a twist; because the first season adapted the entirety of the novel, there’s no more source material. Pratchett died in 2015, but according to Gaiman, the two authors previously came up with ideas for a sequel they never wrote. Gaiman is incorporating those ideas into the second season, and no one knows what to expect.
Or at least, they didn’t until an official Amazon promo gave away something big. We’ll talk about it below, but beware potential SPOILERS.
Neil Gaiman is “fucking furious” about Good Omens season 2 leak
In the trailer above, we see that the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) has left heaven for some reason and is taking refuge in Aziraphale’s rare book shop. Aziraphale and Crowley make up their minds to work together to get to the bottom of this.
There’s also some romantic tension in the trailer, as Gabriel tells Aziraphale that he knows what it’s like to feel perfectly comfortable around “one particular person.” As he says this, the trailer shows images of Aziraphale and Crowley hanging out, implying there’s something between them.
Aziraphale and Crowley have a very passionate fanbase of shippers who create fan-art, write fan-fic, etc. The fans call them the “ineffable husbands.” That moment from the trailer seems like a wink and nudge to them.
But it goes further. In another promo, there’s an image of Aziraphale and Crowley sharing a kiss, making the ship “canon,” so to speak. This has displeased Good Omens fans, who consider it a spoiler and are encouraging each other not to spread it around on Twitter.
Gaiman weighed in on this too, saying that he’s “fucking furious” about the leak on Twitter and further commenting on his blog:
"I’ve heard what’s happened and I’m heartbroken that there are leaks, and that they happened like this. If you want to remain GO2 unspoiled I’d strongly suggest avoiding any places or tags that leaks happen or just staying far away from the internet until July 28th."
Why the Good Omens spoiler isn’t a big deal
Maybe my brain has just been poisoned by covering Game of Thrones spoilers for years, but I have a hard time getting worked up about this. My opinion on spoilers has always been that knowing what happens ahead of time doesn’t much matter as long as the show pulls it off. Like, if the kiss between Aziraphale and Crowley is done right, it will still work for me whether or not I know it’s coming. And if it’s not done right, not knowing it’s coming won’t make it better. That’s why I sometimes still rewatch favorite movies and TV shows even though I know what happens in them; they’re good enough to be worth watching regardless.
That said, there’s also value in surprise, and I’m sorry to all the Good Omens fans who were unwillingly spoiled. I think the show will be worth watching regardless when it premieres on Amazon Prime Video on July 28
