It’s almost time to watch Secret Invasion, the next big Marvel series on Disney+. This one is about a race of shape-shifting aliens who invade Earth…secretly.
The cast is full of heavy hitters, including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen for a decade over on Game of Thrones, will make her MCU debut as G’iah, one of those shape-shifting aliens, and not one of the nicer ones.
“It’s crazy. It’s big. I mean, it’s huge. This is huge. This, for a TV show, this is ridiculous,” Clarke told ET at the premiere event. “I’m here for it! I’m definitely here for it.”
Emilia Clarke “didn’t know I was allowed to do another franchise” after Game of Thrones
The role requires Clarke to be buried under a lot of prosthetic makeup. Daenerys’ platinum blonde wig was nothing compared to this. “It’s a lot,” Clarke said. “I get a little claustrophobic.”
"I have to take my contact lens out and put those [colored lenses] in and then you can’t hear anything because [the prosthetics are over my ears. And then you kind of can’t breathe. Yeah. It’s intense, it’s really intense, so I prefer human makeup because, for this show, there wasn’t a lot of it."
I’m sure her talent will shine through anyway. “I didn’t know I was allowed to do another franchise, but apparently, I was so here I am,” Clarke joked to Access Hollywood.
Emilia Clarke can’t see herself returning as Daenerys Targaryen
According to ET, Clarke is one of over a dozen Game of Thrones veterans to join the MCU. “Oh my God. I did not know that. That seems like a lot! That’s a lot of people. I’m trying to think of who the hell is in them now,” Clarke laughed.
Who’s all in the MCU? Off the top of my head, I know that Kit Harington played the Black Knight, that Richard Madden was in Eternals, and that Peter Dinklage fixed Thor’s hammer in Infinity War. But that’s only three. Are we counting Sophie Turner being Jean Grey in the X-Men movies? How about Finn Jones starring as the title character in Iron Fist? Neither of those are quite in the MCU. Grey area.
Anyway, Clarke was also asked if she could see Daenerys ever returning to the Game of Thrones franchise. “I really don’t think so. I feel like she had such a good run. I don’t think anything was left on the table.”
