The Flash director will helm new Batman movie (not the one with Robert Pattinson)

It’s 2023, and we are awash in Batmen. The Flash has just opened in movie theaters, and it stars not one, but two Caped Crusaders: one played by Ben Affleck and the other by Michael Keaton (and there may be some other cameos involved, don’t tell anyone). It’s practically a Batman movie, so it’s not a huge surprise to hear that director Andy Muschietti has been chosen to helm a whole new Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold.

James Gunn, who’s now in charge of the DC Cinematic Universe alongside Peter Safran, sounded off in a statement. “We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” he said, per The A.V. Club. “It’s a magnificent film–funny, emotional, thrilling–and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave And The Bold, there was really only one choice.”

Barbara Muschietti, Andy’s sister, is on board as a producer. The brother-sister team are regular collaborators. They also worked together on the IT movies. That’s nice, right? Siblings working together? Cute.

The Flash isn’t technically part of Gunn’s new DCU; it’s more of a holdover from the days when Zack Snyder was managing things. Still, it seems to be off to a good start: the reviews are solid from critics and audiences alike, and the first-day returns at the box office are pretty good.

And if people are willing to turn out for the Flash, they’ll probably show up in even bigger numbers for Batman, who has always been the number one draw for movies about DC characters, although there is a danger of overexposure. Like we said, The Flash has multiple Batmen in it. Then there’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, from director Matt Reeves; that movie is getting a sequel.

The Brave and the Bold will be yet another Batman franchise. We don’t know who will play Bruce Wayne yet, but we know this movie will also star Damien Wayne, Bruce’s nigh-sociopathic son who becomes the new Robin; he’s a popular character from the comics who has yet to appear on the big screen, so at least this will be a fun new angle. There’s no release date for the movie yet.
