David Benioff and Dan Weiss are best known as the creators and showrunners of Game of Thrones. For years they were venerated as the brilliant minds behind the biggest TV phenomenon in decades. And then the eighth and final season aired, and their names were dragged on the internet so thoroughly that when you google “bad writers,” their image comes up first.

And now they’re back! This time, Benioff and Weiss are adapting Remembrance of Earth’s Past, a popular and influential novel trilogy by Chinese author Liu Cixin. The series will air on Netflix. It’s called 3 Body Problem, after the first book in the series.

Cixin’s series is complicated and sprawling, but in summary, it’s about what happens when we Earthlings make contact with an alien species. These aliens are located in a very inhospitable star system. They decide that Earth might be a better home for them, so they head here. The story is mostly about how we prepare for their arrival.

3 Body Problem is due out on Netflix in January of 2024.
