George R.R. Martin has been writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, for over a decade. I don’t wanna sound cynical, but if some fans have thrown up their hands and moved on with their lives assuming the book will never come to fruition, I can’t blame them. I hold out hope, but I can’t blame them.

But we needn’t sit on our hands and wait for Martin to provide us with answers. Thanks to the advent of generative AI, we can see what the robots think will happen in The Winds of Winter.

And so, I put the question to OpenAI’s generative chatbot ChatGPT: what lies in store for us in The Winds of Winter?

We asked ChatGPT to predict what happens in The Winds of Winter

"The Battle for the Iron Throne: With the Lannisters losing their grip on power and multiple contenders vying for the Iron Throne, “The Winds of Winter” might feature an intensified struggle for control over the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and Aegon Targaryen could play pivotal roles in this conflict. The White Walker Threat: As the army of the dead advances from beyond the Wall, the remaining characters in Westeros will be forced to confront the impending threat of the White Walkers. This could lead to major battles and strategic alliances being formed against the common enemy.Bran Stark’s Role: Bran Stark’s journey as the Three-Eyed Raven and his abilities to warg and see through time might become crucial in unraveling the mysteries of the past and influencing the future. His interactions with the Night King and his role in the war against the dead could be explored further.Arya Stark’s Quest: Arya Stark’s journey of vengeance and her training as a Faceless Man could continue to be a significant storyline. Her list of names and her connection to the Faceless Men might lead her on a path of personal growth and pivotal encounters.Cersei Lannister’s Downfall: Cersei’s rule in King’s Landing has been marked by cunning and ruthlessness, but her grip on power is increasingly tenuous. “The Winds of Winter” might witness her ultimate downfall as her enemies close in and her schemes unravel."

Okay, well, that was extremely vague and general. Let’s try something a little more specific.

We asked ChatGPT to write the prologue to The Winds of Winter

"The icy winds howled through the desolate lands beyond the Wall, carrying with them a bone-chilling sense of foreboding. It was a harsh winter, one that had gripped the North with an unrelenting fury. The White Walkers, ancient beings of ice and death, had reawakened from their slumber, and the world of men trembled at their approach.Deep within the Haunted Forest, where the trees stood tall and gnarled, a lone figure made its way through the snow-covered terrain. Ser Jorah Mormont, banished knight and loyal companion to Daenerys Targaryen, pressed on with determination etched upon his weathered face. Clad in furs to ward off the biting cold, he carried a sword of Valyrian steel at his side, a testament to his enduring commitment to protect the Queen. He had ventured north of the Wall with a purpose—to seek answers, to unravel the mysteries that haunted his thoughts. The White Walkers were no mere fable; he had witnessed their terrifying power firsthand. And as whispers of a new threat grew louder, he felt a duty to uncover the truths that lay hidden in the frozen wasteland. The journey had not been without peril. Ser Jorah had faced freezing blizzards, hungry predators, and the ever-present danger of the Others lurking in the shadows. Yet, driven by a fierce determination, he pushed forward, undeterred by the risks that lay ahead. As he reached the outskirts of an ancient weirwood grove, a sense of unease settled upon him. The crimson leaves, painted with blood-colored sap, rustled in the wind as if whispering secrets only the old gods could comprehend. The grove felt different, changed somehow, and the very air crackled with an otherworldly energy.Ser Jorah hesitated for a moment, but his curiosity and thirst for knowledge propelled him forward. He stepped beneath the canopy of the weirwoods, their ancient faces staring down at him from every direction. The sight sent a shiver down his spine, as if the gods themselves were watching his every move.In the heart of the grove, he discovered a hidden chamber, its entrance marked by an ornate door carved with intricate symbols. The door beckoned him, its mystery pulling at his soul. With a steady hand, Ser Jorah pushed it open, revealing a chamber bathed in an ethereal glow. Before him stood an altar, adorned with ancient runes and symbols. It pulsed with an otherworldly light, casting long shadows on the chamber walls. As he approached, a faint whisper filled the air—a voice from the past, an echo of forgotten legends.“Ser Jorah Mormont,” the voice spoke, its tone both haunting and familiar. “You seek answers, and answers you shall find. But beware, for knowledge comes with a price.”A surge of anticipation mingled with trepidation coursed through Ser Jorah’s veins. He knew that whatever lay ahead would shape the fate of Westeros, and he, as a humble knight, stood on the precipice of an unimaginable journey. With his heart pounding, Ser Jorah took a deep breath, embracing the unknown. The door closed behind him, sealing him within the chamber of secrets, and the Winds of Winter whispered their ominous song through the grove, heralding the dawn of a new era—one fraught with peril and the promise of redemption. And so began the next chapter in the epic tale of ice and fire."

Okay, now we’re talking! Jorah Mormont somehow goes beyond the Wall (last we see him, he’s with Tyrion outside Meereen on Essos) and hears a spooky voice in a cave! That’s the robot writing I wanted.

Is this how The Winds of Winter will open? Until we actually have the book in our hands, I will assume yes.
