Character thought dead will return for Squid Game season 2
By Dan Selcke
Squid Game, a Korean drama about a dystopian game where poor people are pit against each other for the chance to win a huge sum of money while a bunch of rich thrill-seekers observe, was the breakout hit of 2021. We were all in pandemic lockdown and a Netflix show about people being ground under the brutal thumb of capitalistic excess just hit the spot.
I don’t think Netflix was expecting the show to blow up as big as it did, cause it’s taken them awhile to mount a sequel. But mounting it they are. This weekend, Netflix dropped a cast announcement video showing which faces will be returning to the show, as well as some of the newbies who will be joining:
It’s no surprise to see that Lee Jung-jae, who played lead character Seong Gi-hun, will return. He won the Squid Game the first time around, but last we left him, he’d made a decision to try and take down the whole disgusting enterprise. Meanwhile, Lee Byung-hun played the Front Man in the first season, the guy who oversaw the Squid Game. I’m not shocked to see him, either. Gong Yoo played a guy who recruited people to join the game.
Beware SPOILERS below!
Surprising actor returning for Squid Game season 2
The surprise is Wi Ha-jun, who played police officer Hwang Jun-ho. He infiltrated the Squid Game during the first season. At the end, he found out that the Frontman was actually his missing brother. He appeared to die when his brother shot him in a shoulder, sending him tumbling over a cliff. Still, we didn’t see his body hit the cliffs below and explode, so by the rules of TV he is allowed to come back.
Meanwhile, newcomers include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun. Yim Si-wan has been in a couple of Korean boy bands and Yang Dong-geun is apparently a breakdancer; we’ll see if they get to use any of those skills in the new episodes.
We don’t know when the second season of Squid Game is coming out, but Netflix is starting to ramp things up. And they have something else Squid Game-related to entertain us while we wait…
