Remembrance of Earth’s Past is a sci-fi trilogy of books written by Liu Cixin. The first novel in the trilogy is called The Three-Body Problem, and the entire series is sometimes referred to as Three-Body.
Netflix’s new show 3 Body Problem is an adaptation of this series. It’s being developed by David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the guys who created Game of Thrones for HBO.
The streamer dropped a trailer over the weekend. Watch below:
What is the Netflix show 3 Body Problem about?
Images of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Battleships. Walls full of numbers written in what looks like blood. Warriors ascending to the sky. A woman walking on lava. What is this series about?
Some of these images are surreal beyond measure, but I can give you the basic outline of the plot using the book as a guide.
3 Body Problem is an ambitious sci-fi series that spans a period of many years, with lots of flashbacks and flash-forwards. Essentially, it’s about what happens after scientists on Earth contact an alien species living a few star systems over. The aliens live on a planet that is subject to rapid, traumatic changes in climate thanks to it being situated in a star system involving three celestial bodies (geddit?) with unstable relationships. Upon being contacted, the aliens decide that maybe it’d be better to travel to Earth and just take over that planet, rather than toughing it out on this one. Maybe we should have hung up.
Much of the story involves we on Earth preparing for the aliens’ arrival, whether that means getting ready for war or welcoming our new overlords. We’ll see how Netflix interprets the story when 3 Body Problem premieres in January of next year.
