Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series is one of the most popular fantasy works around. Grimdark and brutal, his books are often recommended to people suffering from Game of Thrones withdrawal. And now, at long last, we’re officially getting our first taste of The First Law series, Best Served Cold, on the big screen!

Best Served Cold follows ruthless mercenary Monza Murcatto as she embarks on a perilous quest of revenge… one that might just change the fate of an entire nation. In the big screen adaptation scripted by Abercrombie and helmed by Tim Miller (Terminator: Dark Fate, Deadpool), Murcatto is played by none other than Rebecca Ferguson (Silo, Dune).

While promoting her latest movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ferguson was asked about where Best Served Cold is in its development. “We were just talking about casting and who we want around,” she told Collider.

“Yeah, I’m very, very excited,” she added before alluding to things being hindered by the WGA strike: “We’ll see now with strikes and everything that’s happening, but everything will happen in its own time.”

Best Served Cold is an interesting entry point into Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series

Of all the stories in Abercombie’s First Law universe, it’s surprising that Best Served Cold is the first novel to get the live-action treatment. It’s a standalone story set after the events of the original trilogy, which began with The Blade Itself. You’d think they’d start at the first book, right?

Either way, we’re getting a fresh new fantasy world on our screens and that can only be a good thing — better than all these reboots, at least.

As Ferguson suggests, the ongoing writer’s strike means progress on Best Served Cold has halted for the time being. This comes as no surprise; everything is being put on pause at the moment. No release date has been set yet. We’ll keep you posted!
