The Last of Us was a huge hit for HBO, a zombie apocalypse story that went light on the zombies and heavy on emotional, character-driven storytelling. The first season saw hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and his surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey) make their way across a ruined United States, experiencing heartbreak, horror and redemption along the way.

The Last of Us season 2 will be a very different sort of story. The first season covered the entirety of the original The Last of Us video game; season 2 will begin adapting The Last of Us Part II, which is a much darker tale of revenge.

Abby has not been cast yet for The Last of Us season 2

One of the major characters we’ll meet next season is Abby, who’s either the villain or the hero depending on how you look at things; it’s complicated. The Last of Us game creator and showrunner Neil Druckmann has teased Abby’s arrival. We know we’ll see her, but so far we don’t know who will play her, despite plenty of speculation from fans that actors like Shannon Berry (The Wilds) or Katy O’Brian (Andor) could do it.

In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Druckmann’s co-showrunner Craig Mazin shot down the fan theories about who will play Abby, confirming that “no one has been cast” yet for the role.

Mazin also nixed a popular fan theory: that Abby was in the surgery room during the season 1 finale, when Joel went on a rampage to save Ellie from the Fireflies. “I can confirm that she was not [in the surgery room],” Mazin said. “That was just one of the Fireflies that happened to have a ponytail. A lot of people have ponytails, so that was not Abby.”

Abby’s story ties into Joel’s rampage in a very specific way, and having her be in the actual surgery room when Joel mows down the doctor wouldn’t have lined up.

That said, Laura Bailey, the voice actor who portrayed Abby in the video game, was in the surgery room. She’s the nurse in the middle.

The Last of Us season 2 is currently on hold due to the WGA writers’ strike. Hopefully the studios come back to the negotiating table soon so that the show can get back on track, and we can still watch it sometime in 2024.
