Director James Gunn has cast actors to play Superman and Lois Lane in his upcoming movie Superman: Legacy: David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

Corenswet has had roles on Ryan Murphy shows like The Politician and Hollywood, but isn’t widely known…until now. Nothing supercharges your career like playing one of the most prominent superheroes in history. Just ask Henry Cavill, the last major actor to don the tights and cape. He’s gone on to be a major star with big parts in stuff like The Witcher and Enola Holmes.

Brosnahan is better known; she won an Emmy for her work as the title character in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a great series that just wrapped up on Amazon Prime Video. Having watched that series, I can easily imagine Brosnahan as a fast-talking, no-nonsense reporter at The Daily Planet.

James Gunn finds actors to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy

Gunn chose Corenswet and Brosnahan after a long search that came down to a few names; for Superman, he also considered Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney. For Lois Lane, he also considered Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor.

I can’t help but note that Corenswet and Brosnahan are the only Americans on that list. Not to be xenophobic, but it does feel weirdly right to me for Superman and Lois Land to be played by American actors, given how closely tied Superman is to American pop culture. I dunno, I’d also feel weird if an American actor played a British icon like James Bond. Anybody else feel this way, or is it just me?

Anyway, Superman: Legacy is due out in theaters on July 11, 2025. Gunn is hoping to use the movie to launch a new DC Cinematic Universe. The last one is currently limping to the finish line with The Flash. Good luck to everyone involved.
