Netflix is getting ready to premiere the third season of The Witcher, or at least part of the season. Unlike in past seasons where Netflix has dropped every episode at once, The Witcher season 3 will be split into two halves with the first part of the season arriving on June 29 and the second of the season arriving on July 29.

This next season will be based mainly on author Andrzej Sapkowski’s book Time of Contempt, which sees the trio of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri get closer than ever as they try to figure out why so many people want to kidnap Ciri.

Yennefer is played by Anya Chalotra, Ciri by Freya Allan, and Geralt by Henry Cavill, who has been the big-name get for the show since the start. However, his time with the show is coming to an end with many wondering whether we’ll be seeing Cavill back as The Witcher in season 3 or if he’s already played Geralt for the final time.

Who is playing The Witcher in season 3?

The upcoming third season of The Witcher will mark Henry Cavill’s final season playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. While the show will continue beyond season 3, Cavill’s time with the show is coming to an end with the upcoming third season standing as his final season in the breakout role.

After season 3, the role of Geralt will be played by actor Liam Hemsworth, who will be taking over the role from Cavill beginning in season 4 of the series. Fans were shocked when they heard the news that Cavill would be leaving the show, but at least fans can enjoy Cavill’s final run as Geralt when The Witcher season 3 premieres this June (and July) on Netflix.

Did Henry Cavill quit The Witcher?

The rumors are true, Henry Cavill did, in fact, quit The Witcher with the actor deciding not to continue in the role of Geralt of Rivia beyond the upcoming third season of the show. Cavill has been a part of the show since its inception and has been a huge draw for the show since Day 1. As a fan of the franchise, Cavill has been a voice for the fans in fighting to honor the source material and bring the Geralt fans love to the screen via his live-action adaptation.

However, after three seasons in the role, Cavill has elected to walk away from the series and will not be returning for future seasons of the show. While Netflix has not firmly ruled out a possible cameo in the future, Cavill’s decision to walk away suggests that season 3 will likely be the final time we’ll see him in the role.

Why did Henry Cavill stop being The Witcher?

Although Henry Cavill has never officially confirmed the exact reason for his decision to leave the show and walk away from the role of Geralt in The Witcher, it has long been speculated that Cavill’s decision to stop being The Witcher was due to creative differences.

As a fan of the source material, Cavill has long been an advocate for remaining true to the heart of the source material which has been something many fans have voiced concerns over as well due to the creative liberties taken with the sourced material.

While promoting season 2, Cavill told Total Film (H/T Games Radar) how he pushed to make the second season more representative of the books — something he noted he had to fight quite hard for.

"“This season, I really wanted to make sure that we represented the book’s Geralt more accurately, and that we saw him speak more. I pushed really, really hard for that.”"

This has been an ongoing struggle for the actor who has taken issue with the show’s adaptation of the books and the changes made to the show. Given Cavill was drawn to the role out of a desire in adapting the source material he was so passionate about, it’s rumored Cavill decided to leave the show as a result of differences between his vision for what the show should versus what the creative team envisions for the show.

With his time with the show coming to a close, it’s likely we’ll hear more from Cavill after his contract has ended as it’s likely Cavill will be more transparent in reflecting on his time with the show and his exit following the release of season 3.
