How does it feel to wear armor on House of the Dragon?

House of the Dragon episode 3

It takes a village to make a show like House of the Dragon. You need writers, directors, actors, and dragons; or failing that, special effects artists who can make it look like there are dragons. And you need people to craft the beautiful armor worn by the knights, mercenaries and other soldiers who populate Westeros.

Much of that job fell to Jany Temime — who designs the costumes for the show — and Simon Brindle — the guy who actually makes the armor. Both of them sounded off for a special feature all about their craft. Watch below!

I like the bit when Temime says that she feels free to design beautiful armor even if it’s not practical because she knows that Brindle will be able to handle it. Hey, it all seems to work out in the end.

The actors sound off as well. In the middle of the video, Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole) talks about how wearing the armor helps him get into the headspace of the character, and there’s a fun shot of him dancing around in it. Hey, very few among us know what it feels like to wear a suit of plate armor; you’ve got to get comfortable somehow.

And based on what Ryan Corr (Ser Harwin Strong) says, getting comfortable in a suit of armor is no easy task; he likens wearing the stuff to “having a 17-year-old hanging off your back.”

The team (minus Corr, who’s character died partway through the first season) will return for House of the Dragon season 2, which is due out on HBO and Max sometime in 2024.
