Outlander stars discuss emotional Episode 2 ending

If you’ve been keeping up with Outlander’s seventh season, then you’re probably on the edge of your seat waiting for the next episode, since Episode 2 ended on a huge cliffhanger (Beware SPOILERS ahead!)

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe discuss emotional ending to latest Outlander episode

Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) and Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the episode and the season ahead. It’s an emotional time for the cast members, because even though this is the penultimate season, many goodbyes have already occurred. That includes the Fraser’s Ridge set, which was burned down for the climax of the most recent episode.

“It’s a really sad moment when we say goodbye to that set and that location,” Balfe said. “But it’s such a catalyst for the rest of the season. We loved filming in that location. It was one of the most beautiful we’ve been. We had a three-dimensional facade on location that was completely burnt down.”

Heughan added, “I know it’s a TV show, but we still have so many great memories there — Brianna and Roger’s wedding, many other great moments being shot there. It was sad to say goodbye.”

And that was just one of the goodbyes that took place in Episode 2. Brianna, Roger, and their kids (including baby Mandy) traveled through the stones and back to the future. Claire discovered that baby Mandy had a heart problem that only doctors in the present could help solve. There were no options but to travel.

The goodbye between the MacKenzies and the Frasers is heartbreakingly devastating. It all feels so final. Sure, the MacKenzies could travel back to the past, but it doesn’t feel like they ever will. I haven’t read the books, so I don’t know if that is something that happens later. From what the episode showed, it seems like Brianna, Roger, Jemmy and Mandy are leaving for good.

“They feel like this is the last time,” Balfe said. “The finality of that for them, it’s like a death in a weird way. They know that it’s happening so that Mandy can be saved and that they will go on and live another life, but for them, they believe that this is the last time they’ll ever see them, which is so heartbreaking.”

One moment that stands out fis when Jamie looks to Claire and says, “If not for you, I would not go on.” Executive producer Maril Davis really wanted to include that line of dialogue from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels. “That, to me, says everything you need to know about their relationship,” Davis said. “He’s just sent his daughter and grandchildren through the stones; he’ll never see them again. It’s like, ‘If not for this person, I would not be able to survive.’ … They complete each other. That doesn’t mean they’re not each on their own complete people, but them together is what makes sense.”

And that is why Outlander is such a beautiful story, ya’ll. It gives me goosebumps and warms my heart, and I don’t know how I will fare without this series.

But let’s not go there just yet; there are plenty of stories left to tell! And based on what we’ve seen thus far, Outlander is about to get more chaotic, heartbreaking and emotional. So strap in! It’s going to be a wild ride.
