Who is Stregobor in The Witcher season 3?
By WiC Staff
Season 3 of The Witcher is out now on Netflix! After the cliffhanger ending to last season, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) has gone into hiding with his foster daughter Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) and on-again-off-again sorceress paramour Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), the better to protect Ciri from the people who are hunting for her.
One of the most prominent people chasing after Ciri is the fire mage Rience (Sam Woolf). However, Rience himself doesn’t seem to have any particular reason for hunting Ciri; instead, he’s working for another mage. The identity of Rience’s employer is one of the mysteries of the season.
Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen) may be Rience’s employer. Stregobor has been on the show since the start, and has a long history with Geralt and Yennefer. If you need a refresher for who the character is, read on.
Stregobor The Witcher explained
Stregobor is a mage from the nation of Kovir. Little is known about his backstory or even how old he is, but he’s likely been practicing magic for at least over one hundred years. We first met him in the series premiere of The Witcher, “The End’s Beginning,” where he tried to convince Geralt to slay the mercenary warrior Renfri. Renfri was a princess who had been deposed due to having the supposed “Curse of the Black Sun,” an astrological curse which Geralt of Rivia firmly believes to be bollocks. Stregobor, however, had a reputation for mutilating and studying women afflicted with this curse.
Ultimately, Geralt is forced to kill Renfri to prevent a bloodbath as she cut her way to Stregobor. This outcome pleased Stregobor, though he and Geralt parted on very bad terms.
In The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, that is the last we see of the sorcerer. But in the Netflix TV series, Stregobor’s role has been expanded. He appears multiple times in season 2, often speaking out against Yennefer of Vengerberg. He has worldly tastes and a willingness to perform horrors in the name of magical research.
In season 3, Stregobor is once more in the spotlight as he comes under suspicion from Geralt and Yennefer. This culminates at the ball at Aretuza in episode 5, where all of their paths finally cross. But since volume 1 of the season ended with a cliffhanger, we don’t know Stregobor’s ultimate fate quite yet.
The first five episodes of The Witcher season 3 are streaming now on Netflix. The final three episodes release on July 27.
